Video by Zen Chung

Hi Tiri, Tell us about yourself

I was born and raised in Kenya and I have lived in London for 8 years. Along with working as the L&D manager at Built By Us, I am doing my PhD. I have a background in fashion with a strong passion for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI).

What do you like about working at BBU?

I love working at BBU because it allows me to be myself in the workplace, and I do feel like I belong , and the values of BBU align with what I want the world to be; a better place for everyone.

You look after the FLUID programme, tell us about it?

The FLUID programme is a programme that addresses under-representation in the sector, and supports career progression. It  is a space for people who are often overlooked in the workplace to be empowered and develop leadership skills.

What can we expect from FLUID this year?

This year we can expect to continue growing a diverse group of talent with strong mentorship partnerships, and sessions that entail insightful strategies for promoting and celebrating EDI as well as tackling issues and scenarios that may arise in the workplace. We have a new look for our handbook as well! We are currently in the process of interviewing everyone as we prepare for matching, it’s wonderful to meet so many people who wish to volunteer their time to support others.

This is FLUID’s 11th year running, what has been the overall achievement of the programme so far?

The FLUID programme has contributed to many applicants’ careers, and through that, the programme has been a space for individuals to create networks and professional relationships to empower each other in the built environment sector.

For anyone interested in joining the programme next year, when do the next applications open?

The next cohort will be in 12 months, with specific dates to be confirmed and announced. BBU will be making an announcement in Spring about its sister programme Shape which provides learning sessions and mentoring and is aimed at budding business founders.

What skills do you need to be a mentor or a mentee on the Shape programme?

Coming with an open mind, willingness to commit and enthusiasm for EDI will be beneficial, as well as listening skills for the mentors, to give their mentees a safe and supportive place to explore.
