Royal Academy of Arts | Breaking Boundaries

EVENT OUTLINE

Architecture is often seen as something that generates boundaries, rather than helping to break them down. Most spaces we live and work in today follow a general set of rules and norms that make them inaccessible to at least some of their users. From out-of-reach kitchen cabinets and narrow pavements to spaces that simply do not allow for access, growth and change, architecture can stop people from living to their full capacity.

Social, cultural and economic inequalities are literally built into our buildings and cities. But instead of dwelling on these boundaries, we’ll be inviting academics, journalists and designers to consider how creative and generous architecture can create spaces of inclusion.

SPEAKERS

Jo-Anne Bichard (Chair) is the Senior Research Fellow at The Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design at the Royal College of Arts. Dr. Bichard is a design anthropologist whose research involves multi / inter-disciplinary collaboration and participatory engagement in the inclusive design process.

Dubravka Sekulić is an architect researching transformations of contemporary cities. She joined the IZK Institute for Contemporary Art in September 2016 after spending three years as a PhD fellow at the Institute for History and Theory of Architecture, ETH Zürich, Switzerland.

Danna Walker is the founder and director of Built By Us, an award-winning innovative social enterprise which exists to actively champion greater diversity and inclusion in the construction sector.

David Bonnet/Helen Allen. David Bonnett Associates is an architectural access consultancy based in London. It operates from studios in Indigo Mews; a converted piano works in Stoke Newington. The practice provides advice on Inclusive Design throughout the UK, and elsewhere, to clients and architects working on projects ranging from small visitor centres and landscape schemes to large-scale masterplans, transport interchanges and residential developments.

Women In Construction Summit

Built By Us founder Danna Walker will be speaking at the Women In Construction Summit at Olympia in London on the 16th May 2019.

Danna Walker and Chair of NAWIC Cristina Lanz Azcarate will be delivering a session called Becoming THAT Leader.

"As the world becomes more complex and disruptive each day, do we need a new style of leadership for construction? The industry often perpetuates an old school, and often, a male-dominated image of leadership and what success looks like. In this workshop, we'll break down what it means to be a leader in the 21st century, develop strategies to become an authentic leader and recognise your leadership qualities, by defining your own success.

NAWIC London and the South East Conference 2018 | 15 years of NAWIC

Taking the driving seat: You can (shape construction)!

Research by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) shows that one of the strengths women bring to business in general and the construction industry, in particular, is creative problem-solving.

Throughout history, women have created solutions to overcome a particular challenge and yet this is not something most people know about. The fire escape, multifunctional kitchen furniture solutions, solar heating and workplace ergonomics are just a few examples of solutions to problems with a female authorship.

We want to show that our industry can provide the framework for innovation and that there are many ways in which this materialises, with women actively seeking to implement changes which will benefit the industry as a whole.

Hence this conference will be geared up to inspire and empower attendees to look around and take action to make a difference within their own environment and the industry as a whole without the need to wait to be given the opportunity.

Built By Us Founder Danna Walker will be taking part in the "Women Shaping the Industry Panel". For more information and tickets visit the link below:

BBC Radio 4 - The Art of Now | The Architecture of Incarceration

As Britain opens the latest in a series of large new jails, architect Danna Walker looks at the unique tensions in architecture's relationship with the judicial system - where the go-to design for prisons is 250 years old, and where ideological conflicts between incarceration and rehabilitation dominate.

The programme will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4, at 11.30 am on Thursday 23 August 2018. It will then be available on the BBC IPlayer
