About Material Cultures

Material Cultures is run by Summer Islam, Paloma Gormley and George Massoud. We are a small team and work very closely on everything we do.

Material Cultures is looking for a freelance designer to work on a number of projects spanning material research, exhibition to housing design.

Our studio is in east London just off Broadway Market, it is wheelchair accessible and is shared with Practice Architecture, Studio Abroad and Eleanor Dodman.

We recognise the discriminatory cultures of architecture, design and construction and actively seek to challenge and change this in the work we do.

Our organisation takes an antiracist and feminist stance with an awareness that we are continually learning and unlearning. We value diversity and do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status or disability status.

We are an equal opportunity employer and we welcome applications from people requiring flexible working terms. We are looking for a candidate with a strong portfolio of work and relevant experience equivalent to that of an RIBA Part II architectural assistant but are open to applications from anyone with any professional or educational background.

The Role: Part II Architectural Assistant – Starting beginning of May

You will work closely with the directors on a number of projects including an exhibition taking projects through all RIBA stages from conception to completion.

The role will be primarily focused on the production of material from drawings, material research to models and renders. Alongside the production of information, you will be expected to attend relevant project meetings and present work to clients. Due to the nature of the work we do we are looking for people who will be able to work from our London office at least 2 days a week. The project work will start at the beginning of May and run indefinitely.

Your Skills and Experience:

  • Two years post part II experience in an architectural practice or relevant other place of work

  • Fluent in CAD (2D and 3D)

  • Confident image and document making abilities (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, drawing, collage)

  • Model-making experience

  • Good communication skills and the ability to manage one’s own time

We request that you do not approach us with enquiries by phone or in person.

We are not able to offer visa sponsorship for applications from abroad.

If you’ve got any questions about our working environment please get in touch.
