About Material Cultures

Material Cultures is looking for a freelance designer to work on a number of projects spanning material research, exhibition to housing design.

Material Cultures brings together design, research and action towards a post carbon built environment. Inherently integrative, the design-led research integrates material science, engineering, systems thinking, digital technologies and architectural design with a direct, active and practical approach.

Through 1-1 experimentation and digital technologies we are developing qualitative prototypical buildings, which are sustainable, economically viable, and positively impact their inhabitant’s lives through considered and robust design. In a climate in which warranties dictate design, and the nature of construction contracts limit quality, Material Cultures seeks to redistribute the priorities of the construction process in favour of design and ecology.

Our studio is in east London just off Broadway Market, it is wheelchair accessible and is shared with Practice Architecture, Studio Abroad and Eleanor Dodman.

We recognise the discriminatory cultures of architecture, design and construction and actively seek to challenge and change this in the work we do. Our organisation takes an antiracist and feminist stance with an awareness that we are continually learning and unlearning.

We value diversity and do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status or disability status. We are an equal opportunity employer and we welcome applications from people requiring flexible working terms.

The Role

You will work closely with the directors on a number of projects including an exhibition taking projects through all RIBA stages from conception to completion.

The role will be primarily focused on the production of material from drawings, material research to models and renders. Alongside the production of information, you will be expected to attend relevant project meetings and present work to clients. Due to the nature of the work we do we are looking for people who will be able to work from our London office at least 2 days a week. The project work will start at the beginning of May and run indefinitely.
