Part 1 Architectural Students | David Chipperfield Architects Ltd | London
Closing Date: 31 May 2022
Salary: £24,000 (plus benefits)
Type: Flexible and Hybrid Working
This role is for Part I architectural students (pre-Masters) who are studying toward their UK Part 2 and looking for their year out placements to join our London office before returning to school to complete their degrees. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects.
This full-time paid one-year placement demands a dedicated self-starter with excellent communication skills and team spirit who is passionate about design and problem-solving.
We have a supportive Part 1 Programme, taking in 8-10 students each year with quarterly peer-group learning sessions, the opportunity to complete a personal research project, site visits, and mentoring are all part of the placement experience.
When applying, please remove your name from your CV and portfolio upload documents. This helps us to have a fairer process where we screen candidates without seeing names to reduce unconscious bias and support good practices for diversity.
Key Responsibilities
We are looking for Part 1 architectural students who can demonstrate their ability to convey their creative ideas effectively using a variety of design tools including hand drawing, Photoshop and InDesign diagrams, producing good digital images, CAD drawings with ArchiCAD, Rhino and MicroStation, and constructing and photographing physical architectural models.
Students who are confident, strong communicators and strongly self-motivated with a passion for learning are preferred.
We understand that many Part 1's will need training in digital design software, and we are prepared to offer software training. Students need to be ready and open to work across projects and learn different software.
Physical model-making and hand-drawing skills are also a plus. How you think about why you design and your ability to communicate the thinking behind your work is as important as the quality of the drawings in your portfolio.
Benefits
On top of a competitive salary of £24,000 per annum for Part 1 placements, we offer staff a wide range of benefits: medical cash insurance plan, pension, study leave provision, private healthcare, an employee assistance programme, site visits, training opportunities (including inhouse CPD seminars), cycle-to-work scheme, interest-free TFL season ticket loan.
Our growing internal cultural programme includes talks from a diverse and varied selection of speakers. We also often gather to celebrate with staff social events and parties. We have an active diversity programme with staff groups to promote awareness and equity around gender, LGBTQ+, racial equality and other diversity positive initiatives.
We have a core hours policy allowing for flexible start/end times to the working day, we hybrid working (a mix of some days from home), and an international working policy which allows up to 30 days to be worked from abroad each year. We are an equal opportunity employer and encourage applications from students of all backgrounds. We are committed to supporting diversity and inclusivity.
We offer equal opportunities for all, regardless of race, gender, religion or belief, sexual orientation, age, disability, and marriage/civil partnership status. We also encourage you to fill out the optional diversity monitoring form which is completely anonymous but helps us to see the overall statistics for who is applying for our vacancies and helps us to learn how to improve the diversity of our candidate outreach.
To apply you will need to upload a portfolio showing a range of work and we encourage you to show your process and thinking as well as finished drawings.
